Kelly Clarkson Offers Perfect Advice to Taylor Swift Which Could Help Her Gain Back Rights to Her Own Music
It is generally assumed that singers own the rights of their own music because they are the ones singing the songs.
However, the music business is much more complicated than that, with singers often having to sign one-sided deals with big record labels to secure an opportunity to publish their music to the masses. Unfortunately, Taylor Swift has had to sign a similar deal, but recent development has left the star feeling cheated of her right.
According to reports, the record label that Taylor had been associated with for the past few years, called Big Machine, apparently sold the rights for her music catalog to another party without first approaching the singer and offering her the opportunity to own her own music as an asset. Since this deal has gone against the convention followed in the music industry, Taylor is obviously very upset.
The Problem
Donald Passman, who is Swift’s lawyer, released a statement to People Magazine explaining that the issue originated when Scott Borchetta, the head of her now-former record label Big Machine, should have extended an option to Taylor with respect to purchasing either the label itself or her masters by the presentation of a check.
Instead, according to Passman, such an opportunity was not extended to Taylor rather it has apparently been given to other potential buyers.
Even if we ignore the fact that Big Machine has allegedly done something wrong, we would be ignoring only half of the problem. The new buyer of her music catalog, who struck a deal with Big Machine worth a whopping $300 million, is none other than Scooter Braun, someone who is not in Taylor’s best books.
Braun is a professional manager for celebrities who has clients such as Justin Bieber as well as Ariana Grande. Hence, it can be deduced that he is a big deal when it comes to the music industry. However, according to Swift, the manager engaged in manipulative bullying in the past with the singer, and now that he owns her music, it is obviously a terrible situation for her.
The Solution
There seems to be a way that Taylor can regain rights to her music, at least according to singer Kelly Clarkson. According to the advice which Clarkson gave to Swift through her Twitter handle, the American Idol winner wants the 29-year-old singer to record her old songs again by heading back to the studio.
Clarkson wants Swift to have all of the artwork for these re-recorded songs to be done all over again, and also advised the Love Story singer to include some incentive with her newly recorded old songs so that her fan base would be encouraged to purchase these new versions instead of the old ones.
As a show of support for Swift, Clarkson even promised that she would be purchasing all these songs once they are recorded just to make a point, probably implying that a mere business deal should not have the power to take away the right from any singer of owning their own music.
