Perks Of Being A Princess: Royal Tiaras Of The World
Almost every princess, both in fairy tales and in real life, is identified by her crowns and tiaras. Since it is no longer common for royals to wear their crowns everywhere they go, they are leaving them instead for special occasions like weddings. So here are some of the new generation’s princesses with their wedding tiaras.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
She is considered to be the real-life Cinderella when she married the Prince of Great Britain, Prince William. However, she didn’t really have a rough life; unlike Cinderella, Catherine actually belonged to an upper-middle-class family. Despite this, she is still a “commoner.” She met the prince in 2001 at the University of St. Andrews while they were still studying there. They got married in April of 2011 and now have two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
When she got married, the tiara she wore didn’t actually belong to her, but the Queen herself. It was King George VI’s gift to his wife for their anniversary back in 1936. It was purchased from Cartier and it consists of almost 1,000 diamonds on it. The Queen then gave it to her daughter, the current Queen Elizabeth II as a gift for her 18th birthday.
What is so nice about Duchess Kate is that she doesn’t feel the need to wear the crown very often; in fact, she only wears her tiara to very formal events. So people identify her as a more down to earth version of the late Princess Diana. Duchess Kate also wore the iconic Cambridge Lover’s Knot, which was originally worn by her late mother-in-law. She is also in possession of the sapphire ring that once belonged to the late Princess Diana. The ring was passed down to her eldest son, Prince William, who used proposed to Kate with it.
Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark
Another “commoner” turned royal is the Mary Elizabeth Donaldson or now known as Mary, The Crown Princess of Denmark. She was born and raised in Australia. She met her now husband, Prince Frederick of Denmark at the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney. They survived a long distance relationship and eventually got married in 2004 in Copenhagen.
The Crown Princess of Denmark is known for having beautiful tiaras. The very first one she wore in public is the Danish Ruby Parker Tiara. It was actually the late Queen Ingrid’s tiara that has been passed down to her grandson, Prince Fredrick, to be given to his future wife, the now Princess Mary. She has also worn a simpler crown with pearls on it. This tiara was given to her by Queen Margarethe and Prince Henrik. It can actually serve double duty and be turned into a necklace.
Letizia, Queen of Spain
From two Princesses to a Queen, Letizia is the current Queen of Spain and the wife of King Felipe VI. They inherited the throne when King Juan Carlos I died in 2014. They got engaged in 2003 when King Felipe proposed to her with a 16-baguette diamond engagement ring accented with a white gold trim.
Being the Queen definitely has its own perks. One of those perks is having a collection of tiaras. There is the Prussian Tiara, a German imperial heirloom, passed down from mother to daughter until it reached King Felipe’s mother, Queen Sofia, who wore it on her wedding. The Prussian was the worn by Queen Letizia on her wedding day with King Felipe. Another tiara originally owned by Queen Sofia is the diamond floral tiara. It was actually made in the 19th century and of course, there’s the diamond and pearl shell tiara made by Mellerio.
Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden
Last, but certainly not the least, is the Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. She is actually the oldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, making her the Princess of Sweden by birth and the first in a line of succession. In 2010, she got married to Daniel Westling in the Stockholm Cathedral. They now have two children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.
Being the only royal born princess on this list, Princess Victoria has the widest collection of tiaras among them. The very first crown she wore was when she turned 18 when her parents gave her a sapphire and diamond crown. The next one is the Diamond Bandeau that looks like an extremely fancy headband. And then there’s the Queen Josephine’s Amethyst Tiara which was actually turned into a necklace. Princess Victoria’s signature crown, however, is the Baden Fringe Tiara that many royal ladies have worn. And finally, there is the Cameo Tiara, which she wore on her wedding day.
