Civil rights must be one of the most controversial issues in the history of America. Well aware of the consequences she could face, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland vowed to do anything in her power to fight for civil rights. She was only 18 when she partook in her first sit-in.
Pictured above are Mulholland’s mugshots from when she went behind bars in 1961. She was only 19 at the time, and the arrest was due to sitting in a white-only waiting room with African Americans, who were also Freedom Riders just like her. Mulholland is now 78 years old, and she has fought for civil rights her entire life.
